Lot description:

ARGOLIS. Epidauros. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Diassarion (Bronze, 23 mm, 7.67 g, 1 h). ΑΝΤΩ -ΝΕΙΝΟC ΑΥΓ Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. ΙΕΡΑC ΕΠΙ - ΔΑΥΡΟΥ Draped female figure standing to right (probably Hygeia), holding long sceptre with her right hand and uncertain object in her left, probably a cupping vessel. NCP Suppl. p. 161, 6 = RPC IV, 1, 10963. RPC IV, 1, 7940 (both are the same type, but are differently described). Very rare. Clear and with a dark patina. Rough surfaces, otherwise, about very fine.
From the Maleatas Collection and from the BCD Collection, acquired in June 1985.

The online, temporary, version of RPC IV.1 suggests, about the Paris example, 7940, that the figure on the reverse is holding an amphora; this is impossible. It is most likely a cupping vessel, as suggested for the two pieces in Berlin (10963, 1-2).

Estimate: 200 CHF
